There is a Silver Lining!
2020 will be a make or break year for many of us. This has been an unprecedented year and we are only at the start of April.
With the stock markets plummet, the unemployment rates in the US skyrockets to numbers not seen since the Great Depression, and more than 6.6 million unemployment applications filed in a single week, it’s time to reassess how SMB's and brick and mortar stores generate income.
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us all to reconsider our supply chain for even the most essential items. We have all become accustomed to the ease of purchase of goods online over the past few years, as well as the almost instant delivery of the item.
In the past few weeks, this premise has all but ground to an unprecedented holt due to COVID-19. The Parent Diary has experienced disruption of the large warehouses that fulfill our online sales, no longer are these warehouses able to pick and pack items for delivery due to COVID-19. Our largest eco distribution supplier, UNFI/ Honest Green had to close its online eCommerce business. This meant no more handsoap, toothpaste, or toilet paper could be purchased online and fulfilled by these large warehouses and distribution facilities.
Dead in the water?
Even Amazon, the world’s largest retailer has been stumped by the crisis. Amazon closed its FBA warehouse intake for all non-essential items. There are so many online stores that depend on these large 3rd party fulfillment centers that are quite literally now dead in the water.
Even though this seems like a dreadful situation, and it is, there is a silver lining. The silver lining being that we as human beings will start changing our behavior over the next few weeks and months - for the better, I believe. We will spend more quality time with our loved ones, become more patient and measured shoppers, and we will all be forced to reconsider our dependency on these large supply chains and what job security will mean for us in the future.
The Huge opportunity for small businesses
I truly believe that this is a huge opportunity for small businesses, product manufacturers and shoppers to break the dependency they have on the likes of Amazon. If you have ever been an amazon seller or shopper, you have some idea of what I’m talking about.
eCommerce is not going to go away any time soon, sure there has been a downward trend in the demand for some product, and a huge up tread for others. Now is the time for eCommerce businesses to dig deep and look for alternatives to the supply chain that has just been broken, set up more robust and diverse channels and look to smaller independent 3rd party fulfillment companies or simply be able to fulfill orders from your spare room for a while.
At The Parent Diary, we know the silver lining is there for all forward-thinking SMB's. We welcome you to be a seller on our marketplace and get instant access and visibility for your business on google express, Bing and Google shopping product advertising. We also highlight new sellers and brands via email to our database of customers – not something you might expect to get from Amazon anything soon.
